Greek States - Attica (Athens), AR Owl Tetradrachm (ca 440-404BC) - NGC MS

$2,000.00

Offered is a sublime example of the iconic silver Athenian ‘Owl’ Tetradrachm (this example 17.19g), Kroll#8, Copenhagen#31-40, HGC4#1597. Encapsulated by NGC as ‘MS,’ regardless of one’s stance on TPG, we find it difficult to argue with this assessment, as this chunky ancient presents fantastic detail and clean fields, much as struck. A regular flan and the fine style which characterize these ‘classic’ period Owls lend this piece superb eye-appeal, while well-centred dies on both sides preserve as near complete detail as can be asked for on this issue. Indeed, as flans for this generation of Owl were both prepared to accommodate, and centred on the obverse die, a true marker of a choice example is a complete reverse owl and inscriptions, which is here observed. In all, the best example of this type that we have handled, and a true ‘museum quality’ coin.
