Offered is a scarce Juno-type (IVNO REGINA) silver Denarius of Julia Soaemias (IVULIA SOAEMIAS AVGVSTA) - mother of Elagabalus and titled Augusta, struck at Rome in 220AD, BMCRE#41, RIC#237, RSC#3, SEAR#7718. Julia Soaemias is credited with nearly derailing the Severan restoration by matching and encouraging her son’s delusion and depravity. Interestingly, coins in her name only began to be struck in the latter 2 years of Elagabalus’ reign, and in limited quantity, making them a tougher portrait type in general. This example quite pleasing overall, with a lovely ‘old’ grey-black patina. A well-centred obverse would make this a good portrait coin or addition to a specialized collection alike!
