Roman Empire - AR Denarius of Trajan (101-102AD)

€95.00

Offered is an interesting silver ‘Victory Seated’ type Denarius, struck at Rome under the reign of Emperor Trajan, RIC#57, RSC#239. This coin represents a very unusual transitional variant for the type, which is most often found with the reverse inscription ‘PM TRP COS III PP’ rather than the ‘COS IIII’ here observed. While the existence of the ‘COS IIII / Victory Seated’ type is well-recorded, it remains far scarcer than the ‘COS III’ or the ‘COS IIII / Victory Standing’ type (RIC#66) which replaced it in 102AD. This example struck on a good 19.5mm planchet, displaying good centring for the period. Remaining detail is very pleasing, and the patina is an appealing, albeit slightly mottled medium to deep grey. A very solid example of a fascinating type overall.
