Offered is a rare and desirable 25mm AE, issued at Tyre (Roman province of Phoenicia) under the rule of Caracalla in 198-217AD, Rouvier#2318, BMC#376. This coin depicts a hexastyle Temple of the Phoenician Koinon, surrounded by inscription SEP TVRVS METRO COLONI, Murex shell between palm branches below. The reverse features a bearded, laureate portait of the Emperor surrounded by inscription IMP M AVR ANTONINVS. An interesting architectural issue, this example remains much better than average for this type, being well struck on both sides, and retaining a chocolate brown patina with bronze-green blooms in the fields. A very appealing and scarce ancient.
