Roman Republic - Anonymous Post-Reform As (211-206BC)
Offered is a substantial 33mm bronze As, issued during the Roman Republic, and depicts the laureate, bearded head of Janus, as well as a galley’s prow with ROMA below on the reverse, Sear#627, BMCRR#217, RRC#56/2, NMW#85. As this is one of the early anonymous issues, with ‘I’ above prow and a void field before, this piece dates from around 211-206BC. A chunky piece, this full-weight (ca. 35g) example retains much good detail and an attractive patina, making it above average for the type.
