Britain - 1695 Charles I Bronze Death & Memorial Medal
Offered is an example of the much-sought 50mm medal struck by J Roettier in bronze at the Royal mint in 1695 to commemorate the death of King Charles I in 1649, Eimer#162a. Other than a lovely portrait of Charles I, this medal depicts a hand issuing forth from the heavens (God) extending a crown (the monarchy) above a landscape with sheep (the people, and an allusion to Catholic symbolism). This medal was originally offered for sale in the London Gazette at ‘5 Guineas in bronze, 10 Shillings in gilt-bronze and 25 Shillings in silver.’ This example retains good detail despite a historic cleaning. Some obverse scratches of note, otherwise most pleasing.
