Offered is a fascinating 40mm turn of the last century 'False Shekel' produced by famed London purveyor of regalia and ensigns George Kenning. These pieces were manufactured from around 1750 to present for use in Masonic rituals, but have also been known to be used as small gifts / local tokens within European Jewish communities. Although most are unsigned, the finer ones (such as this) bear the manufacturer's name.

George Kenning were founded in 1860 and acquired Spencer & Co in 1947. They were in turn acquired by Toye & Co. in 1956, adopting the current trading name of Toye, Kenning and Spencer in 1962. Toye, Kenning and Spencer are today best known and longest running manufacturer of Masonic regalia, as well as regalia for other friendly societies.

It must be noted that of these earlier Shekels, the Spencer signed pieces are the most common, with Kenning tokens being much rarer. This example is perhaps the finest in terms of style and manufacture that we have ever handled, and retains superb detail and some original luster. Only a slight bend detracts. All in all, a scarce specialized piece.
