George III 1806 Halfpenny Countermarked Davis

sold out

Offered is an unusual and interesting 1806 Halfpenny of King George III, countermarked ca 1810 by London spirits merchant Samuel Davis, KM#662 (host), Scott#22.12 (mark). Samuel Davis was a wine and brandy merchant at 46 Houndsditch, City of London, occupying this address between 1808-1822 - there is some indication that the firm moved to Islington, and that it continued with the help of his son until at least 1846.

Davis’ countermarks are found almost exclusively on 1806 Halfpennies, and indeed appear to have circulated extensively, with most examples today being quite worn / damaged. This example exceptionally nice for the issue, with a very strong host, and a fanatstic mark, as well as an illusive, all-original patina. A lovely and scarce countermark.
