Offered is a splendid 35mm x 28mm Greco-Buddhist fragmentary Buddha, dating from between 100-300AD, and emanating from the famed workshops of Gandhara (today modern Pakistan / Afghanistan). This piece is carved from Grey Schist, and is a typical ‘smiling’ depiction, with western features and wavy hair, and owing to the flat back, we are assuming that it has been removed from a bas-relief. The quality of manufacture is apparent in the facial features, which exude incredible character. In all, a manageable piece which would mount nicely.
From a London collection formed before 1980. British Museum Room 33 for example of similar style.
