Sheffield (Yorkshire) 1813 Hobson 1d Commercial Token - Davis#138

$125.00
sold out

Offered is an absolutely stonking example of the 1813 Penny token issued by Samuel Hobson & Sons of Sheffield, Davis#138. This piece is remarkable for a number of reasons, not least that it is of the much scarcer second year for this issue - in our experience, the 1812s turn up around ten times more frequently than their 1813 counterparts.

Secondly, this example displays absolutely no evidence of having been struck with rusty dies - an issue which afflicts the majority of 1813s, and we suspect one of the reasons that the issue was discontinued.

Lastly, this example is in superb condition for the issue, being even better than the British Museum example (item 1870,0507.1753) acquired as early as 1870. The detail, surfaces and edge are pretty much as good as is available for a real workhorse coin. The even walnut patina rounds out the eye-appeal of this wonderful 19th century copper.
