Southampton (Hampshire) 1794 Naval Farthing - D&H#102

$60.00
sold out

Offered is a higher-grade Admiral Howe / Glorious First of June type Naval Farthing, D&H#102. This interesting type commemorates the victory of Admiral Richard Howe (of American Revolutionary War fame) over the French fleet at Ushant. Contrary to the ‘glorious’ appellation, the engagement was extremely confused and messy, with both sides claiming victory after the fact. Nevertheless, Admiral Howe received great accolades, and as a capable commander, he later went on to diffuse the Spithead mutiny, becoming a Knight of the Order of the Garter.

Although it is not unusual to find higher-grade examples of this type, this particular piece stands well-above the average. A lovely chocolate patina is betrayed only by hints of lustre which peak out between some letters of the inscriptions. A very appealing token.

Obv: ADML EARL HOWE

Rev: GLORIOUS FIRST OF IUNE 1794 / FARTHING

Edge: Engrailed
