Offered is a fascinating countermarked advertizing token for W. Tilley & Son, coal merchants at 11 & 159 Lewes Road, Brunk#T-294. This appealing example struck on an 1855 BB French 10 Centime, KM#771.3. These tokens were produced using imported French coppers as a way of manufacturing a circulating advertizing piece which might pass as a Penny without running afoul of British laws concerning defacing coin of the realm. A scarce countermark, and a wonderful piece of commercial history.
