Charles II 1665 Pattern Farthing In Copper
Offered is a scarce 1665 pattern Farthing, prepared by John Roettiers for Charles II, this example in copper, obverse 1a (short hair), reverse A (loose drapery), plain edge, Peck#412. It must be noted that copper pieces of this series are actually scarcer than their silver counterparts, and that this particular die combination in this metal is especially tricky. Solid remaining detail for the type, original surfaces, and a lovely chocolate patina round out the eye-appeal of this piece. Some of the usual plachet stress noted. Interestingly, it is thought that Britannia was modelled on the Duchess of Richmond, Frances Stewart.
Ex. Lawrences, FC270521 (27 May 2021), Lot 977; Holdsworth, January 2025.
