Charles II 1665 Pattern Farthing In Silver
Offered is a scarce 1665 pattern Farthing, prepared by John Roettiers for Charles II, this example in silver, obverse 2 (long hair), reverse A (loose drapery), straight reeded edge, Peck#422. As is to be expected from a pattern piece tendered for approval, this Farthing displays superior artistry and die-sinking. The good remaining detail, original surfaces, and deep patina of this piece all serve to lend it superior eye-appeal for the type. Interestingly, it is thought that Britannia was modelled on the Duchess of Richmond, Frances Stewart.
Ex. Lawrences, FC270521 (27 May 2021), Lot 977; Holdsworth, January 2025.
