Offered is a wonderful 1723 Shilling, being the type struck from South Sea Company silver, first bust, ‘SS/C’ reverse, KM#539.3, SP#3647. A very appealing example of this sought type, this piece retains excellent detail despite the typical weakness at 12. An even middling-grey patina serves to round out this coin. Interestingly, it is said that an SSC Shilling was what inspired a young James Cook to take to the waves - an entirely plausible tale considering the exotic allure that this coin carries to this day.
