Canada 1940 H. J. Carmichael Buick Dealer Encased Dime
Offered is a very scarce ‘Bet Your Last Dime on Buick in 1940’ promotional encased 10c, issued by GM dealer H. J. Carmichael. This particular piece measures 32mm in diameter, and weighs 9.2g, consisting of both an outer brass ring, as well as the .800AR dime. Pleasing overall condition, with some evidence of it having been a pocket piece at some point.
For his part, Mr Carmichael is an important figure in Canadian automotive history. He began working for McKinnon Industries (later GM Canada, St. Catherines) as a pattern maker in 1912, before rising to President in 1929. By 1936, Carmichael was appointed vice-president and general manager of General Motors of Canada at Oshawa, and during the war, he was appointed Director General of the Gun Production Branch, Department of Munitions and Supply - placing him in charge of arms manufacturing for the Canadian Government.
All in all, a fascinating and scarce piece of Canadiana, as well as GM / automotive history.
