Offered is an intriguing 5 Mil coin, struck by the Monnaie de Paris for Cyprus in 1982, being of the ‘bold inscriptions’ variety, KM#50.2. Although not specifically inscribed ‘ESSAI’ (as is typical for MdP), this piece bears a special specimen finish, as well as original ‘tricolor’ mint sachet which distinguish it from the regular business strikes. The exact status of this strike has long been the subject of discussion in French numismatic circles, but the general consensus is that these were produced as first strikes to include with VIP Essai sets.
