Coalbrook Dale (Shropshire) 1792 Iron Bridge 1/2 Penny - D&H#10

$40.00

Offered is a fascinating 1792 Conder Halfpenny, issued at Coalbrook Dale, and depicting the ever-popular ‘iron bridge’ theme, D&H#10. The bridge was constructed over the course of 2 years, and when completed in 1781, was the first major iron bridge in the world. It’s success led to the proliferation of iron construction in bridges throughout the world. Owing to the instability of the banks of the gorge that it spans, the bridge required constant repair through it’s existence, and was closed to vehicular traffic in 1934. The bridge remains open to pedestrian traffic to this day, having been transferred to public ownership in 1950.

This token features not only a view of the bridge, but also view of the inclined plane which serviced the Shropshire Canal, making this example a wonderful peek in to Britain’s industrial revolution. Rated ‘scarce’ by Dalton and Hamer, this specimen retains good detail, despite slightly mis-matched obv and rev patinas.
