Offered is a rare variety (rated RRR in D&H!) of the ever-popular ‘Lady Godiva / Elephant & Castle’ type Halfpenny Conder from Coventry, D+H#238a. Of note is that it is generally accepted that the artist had never seen an elephant, explaining the familiar, and yet completely incorrect depiction of the animal.
Although suffering from some minor pitting, this 1793 example retains solid detail, as well as a rich, original patina. This rare late example of the ‘figure near O’ / ‘elephant with protuberance’ type would make a handsome addition to any specialized collection.
