Coventry (Warwickshire) 1793 Lady Godiva 1/2d - D+H#244

$50.00

Offered is a detailed example of the ever-popular ‘Lady Godiva / Elephant & Castle’ type halfpenny Conder from Coventry, D+H#244. This 1793 example is of the ‘high inscription, Y clear of elephant’ variety, and thusly comes late in the series. Of note is that it is generally accepted that the artist had never seen an elephant, explaining the familiar, and yet completely incorrect depiction of the animal.

Although previously cleaned, this piece retains remarkable detail, and will undoubtedly mature into a most attractive piece as it re-tones. Being much scarcer than the 1792 issues (D+H#238, etc), this is a great opportunity to acquire a tougher variety with a lot of potential.
