Enniscorthy (Wexford) 1800 Woodcock 1/2 Conder Token - D+H#4

$60.00

Offered is a fascinating 1800 Robert Woodcock halfpenny token issued at Enniscorthy, D+H#4. This is a very attractively designed piece, with dies sunk by Kuchler, complimented by a superb strike thanks to the Boulton Mint, Soho.

In his work on commercial tokens, R. C. Bell notes that the reverse design, featuring a monogrammed shield knotted to a leafless tree, is set against three peaks, one of which is Vinegar Hill. Bell goes on to suggest that this backdrop is an allusion to the United Irish rebellion of 1798, which had culminated in a military confrontation on Vinegar Hill. This battle resulted in around 500 casualties and a decisive Irish defeat. The deceased were interred in a mass grave at the base of the peak, where they remain to this day.

With great detail, and a wholesome, original patina, this piece is a great numismatic item with a colourful background.
