Gloucester (Gloucestershire) c. 1811 Whalley Silver Halfcrown Token - Dalton#4

$225.00

Offered is a very unusual 9.54g, 2/6d, or Halfcrown silver token, issued by J Whalley (a linen merchant and banker) at Gloucester around 1811, Dalton#4. Tokens of this denomination were very scarcely issued, as generally the risk increased, and the marginal benefit of privately issuing tokens decreased as the denomination got larger - indeed, although we have previously handled 2/- tokens of this period, this is the first Halfcrown that we have stocked.

This example well-struck, and displaying only light circulation wear. Flashes of underlying lustre pretty much throughout despite some blotchy patina. A most pleasing example of an exceptional issue.

Obv: GLOUCESTER TOKEN TWO SHILLINGS & SIX PENCE

Rev: A POUND NOTE FOR EIGHT TOKENS GIVEN BY J.WALLEY GLOUCESTER AND AT No.10 CHARLOTTE ST. FITZROY SQUARE LONDON

Edge: Milled
