Offered is an interesting 1793 Halfpenny Conder token commissioned by John Downing, and depicting the significant East India House building at London, D&H#15a. This particular depiction of the now demolished building reflects the structure as it stood following its 1726-29 remodel by Theodore Jacobsen, but before its eventual extension in 1796-1800. At the time, it would have been the place from which all possessions in East India were governed, and indeed, continued to be until 1851. For his part, Mr Downing was a grocer and notably a dealer in fine teas - a fact which means that he most likely would have dealt extensively with the EIC.
The token itself retains great detail, and although the patinas are not matched obv / rev (for some reason, not unusual on coins of this type), both remain attractive. A scarcer token with good regional and national interest.
Obv: HALFPENNY 1793
Rev: EAST INDIA HOUSE
Edge: LONDON BRISTOL AND LIVERPOOL
