Lackington's (Middlesex) 1796 Palmer's Mail Coaches 1/2d Conder - D&H#363
Offered is an example of the ever-popular ‘Palmer’s Mail Coaches Halfpenny Conder, being part of the more extensive ‘Lackington’s’ series from Middlesex D&H#363. John Palmer (1742-1818) was a theatre owner who realized that the use of coach routes would make for a much safer and faster mail service than the (then current system of riders). In 1782 he proposed his idea to the Post Office, but was met with resistance. Two years later, he convinced none other than William Pitt to allow for a trial run between London and Bristol - an experiment which proved an absolute success - by 1797, the network was national. A reasonable example retaining good detail, and generally being in better state than most circulated examples of this type despite a historic cleaning.
