Portsea (Hampshire) 1796 St George 1/2 Penny Conder - D&H#80
Offered is a lovely 1796 Halfpenny Conder token issued by a trio of victuallers from Portsea, bearing the ever-popular St George & dragon / ship above salmon design combination, D&H#80. This particular example is of the scarcer ‘dragon without spines’ type, which is around 4-5x scarcer than its D&H#79 counterpart (indeed Dalton and Hamer rate this design as ‘Scarce’).
S Salmon, proprietor of The Brown Bear, John Courtney of The George, and Edward Frost of The Ship all pooled together to order this token from Kempson, each included in one of the design elements on the token. This particular example retains good detail for the type, as well as a lovely, original ebony patina.
