Offered is an absolutely superb 1811 Shilling (12 Pence) Token, issued by James Dudley (a silversmith) at Portsmouth, being of the ‘wreath with 18 berries’ variety, Dalton#37, Davis#32. Rated as ‘rare’ in Dalton, we might even today consider this a conservative assessment, as it is one of the more rarely seen silver commercial token issues of this period (all of which are scarce).
Further distinguishing this example is an impeccable quality of strike, which is paired with outstanding overall condition. Although bearing a light patina, there is considerable lustre in the mirrored fields, which set off frosty devices. We have elected not to touch / dip this piece so as to allow the future owner to take their own view on how to maintain it. A truly exceptional example of a scarce and interesting token.
Obv: PAYABLE AT I. DUDLEYS / PORTSMOUTH 1811
Rev: SILVER TOKEN / XII PENCE
Edge: Engrailed
