Sleaford (Leicestershire) 1790s John of Gaunt 1/2 Penny Conder - D&H#3b
Offered is an intriguing 1790s Conder Halfpenny, issued by various merchants in Sleaford, with this example being of the ‘plain edge’ variety, D&H#3b. An unusual piece in which the ‘John of Gaunt’ Lancaster obverse has been paired with a local reverse by the manufacturer Lutwyche - perhaps as a cost saving measure, or possibly to build an association with the widely accepted northern type. Although Thomas Ball (a grocer) was the primary issuer of this muled type, Staplehurst merchant I Simmons also commissioned an identifying collar.
This example pretty much as good as one can hope for from this scarce issue rated R in Dalton & Hamer, bearing good remaining detail, as well as a lovely, even mahogany patina. Even the Baldwins vault example (sold recently) is not substantially better than this piece. A very pleasing example which will be of great local interest.
Obv: JOHN OF GAUNT DUKE OF LANCASTER
