Algiers 1930s Casino Municipal 5 Franc Token

$75.00

Offered is a lovely red Bakelite and gilt 5 Franc casino chip, issued by the Casino Municipal Alger (Algiers), Gadoury#161. This denomination is reported to have circulated as token coinage in the city in the 1930s during one of the many coin shortages experienced in the French colony. Condition is most pleasing overall, with no loss to the gilt, and only minor surface abrasions typical of this soft material. A scarce and interesting ‘monnaie de nécesité.’
