France (Mainz) 1793 Siege Sol
Offered is an interesting emergency Sol, issued under the authority of General Custine during the siege of Mainz in 1793, KM#601, VG#399, Gad#1789-65, Korchnak#410. Mainz had been captured by Gen Custine in 1792, but he in turn was besieged by the Prussians from April 6 to July 22, 1793. Following the French surrender, their forces evacuated to Vendee, where they were subsequently annihilated, with Custine later being guillotined for treason in what is widely considered a scapegoat trial.
Condition here is quite typical of this scarce issue, with this example retaining decent detail (particularly on the fasces) for the type. A deep ebony patina succumbs to only very slight occasional mottling, but displays no evidence of active environmental damage. A solid piece of siege coinage.
