German States - Cologne (Koln) 1730 Commissary Wine Token
Offered is a delightful wine token issued by the city of Koln (Cologne) in 1730. An interesting example of an early bi-metallic token (tin with a copper plug), this charming piece remains in well above average condition for the type, bearing no corrosion, as well as considerable lustre in and around the devices.
Although displaying some weakness of strike on the shield, the rest of the design is crisp, and nicely set off by auburn hues on the reverse, and more striking russet tones on the obverse. Although generally available, true EF+ examples of this type are scarce, with one comparable selling at Heritage as part of the Newman collection (lot #15131) back in 2014 for in excess of $320.
A great thematic token, and an ever-popular type!
