Britain 1807 (ca 1830) London Institute Pass / Check

€60.00

Offered is handsome 43mm, 28.5g bronze membership pass or check, sunk by William Wyon for the London Institution, BM#MG.1079. The Institution was established on 18 January 1806, in the house of Sir William Clayton (Lord Mayor of London in the time of Charles II), at 8 Old Jewry in the City of London at an annual rent of £350. It’s stated aim was the advancement and diffusion of science, literature and knowledge, particularly to those marginalized or barred from the major British universities.

The society functioned on a subscription model, divided in to ‘Proprietors,’ ‘Life Subscribers,’ and ‘Annual Subscribers.’ Although the specific purpose of these membership medals is lost to time, it is generally speculated that they were issued to the ‘Life Subscribers,’ generally in the 1830s. In all, an appealing and interesting piece from one of the leading medallists of the time. Indeed, both a great piece of social and medallic history.
