Offered is a most handsome 1725-issued 38mm bronze medal, sunk by JA Dassier to commemorate the death of Peter I (the Great), Diakov 63.12; Eisler 138; Reichel 1549; Iversen 57/5; Weiss BW371. This fantastically crafted piece features Neptune and Bellona with inscription ‘EX UTROQUE MAGNUS’ (great on both land and sea), alluding to his seizing of access to the Baltic sea, as well as the construction of St. Petersburg. The half-portrait obverse is a credit to the work of Dassier, bearing all of the character and detail which defines his work. The medal is near as-struck overall, bearing only the slightest hints of cabinet friction, as well as a lovely, original chocolate patina. A choice example of a canonical medal.
