Offered is a scarce and appealing 32mm bronze medal, struck by Lorioli Fratelli at Rome for the Sovereign Military Order of the Knights of Malta in 1988 on the occasion of the coronation of the new Prince and Grand Master Adreas Bertie (Andrew Bertie). Bertie was an Englishman, and a distant relative of the Royal family, and served in the Scots Guard before teaching a plethora of languages. He joined the order in 1959, and rose through the ranks, becoming Grand Master in 1988 upon the ratification of John Paul II. He would lead the order until his death in 2008, championing in particular causes which helped the sick and dyeing. All material from the Knights of Malta is produced in small quantities, and this medal is no exception - we have traced only a few bronze examples in the market for the past 5 or so years. This example remains most attractive, retaining PL devices and considerable lustre. A very pleasing piece in hand.
