United Kingdom 1746 Duke of Cumberland Jacobite Rising Medal

€85.00

Offered is a rare and fascinating ca 1746 medal, issued to commemorate the Duke of Cumberland’s brutal pacification of the Jacobite Rising in Scotland in 1745-46, Skinner & Haggard#68. This piece depicts the Duke on horseback, as well as a hanging rebel with the symbolic Jack Ketch atop the gallows - a haunting and unusual depiction with regards to medals in this series. It is difficult to overstate the zealous sadism with which the Duke and his troops pacified the Highlands, earning him the title of ‘the Butcher.’ This brass-alloy, 34mm piece remains in decent condition for the type (generally found excessively corroded), and bears a lovely chocolate-brown patina overall.
