Offered is a 1799-issued medal commemorating the successes of George John Spencer, 2nd Earl Spencer in his capacity as Lord of the Admiralty, BHM#471, EIMER#913. Lord Spencer played an indispencible role during the chaotic years of the French Revolution and rise of Napoleon, being instrumental in putting down the mutinies at Spithead and Nore, as well as promoting Nelson (of Trafalgar fame). He later became Home Secretary in the early 19th century. This 38mm white metal example showcases Wyon’s work well, being of reasonably high relief on the portrait side. Condition overall is good, with subdued luster setting off PL devices. A lovely historical medal of considerable maritime interest.
