Swiss Cantons - Bern ca. 1780-1820 Silver Gartnerpfennig
Offered is a fascinating, 30mm, 7g silver Gartnerpfennig issued in Bern in the late 18th-early 19th centuries. Although these were issued as school awards, they also circulated as 7½ Batzen coins (owing to their proximate weight to a 1/3 Thaler). These pieces are to be found in numerous designs, but more scarcely with reeded edges, as this example has. Likely, this feature was incorporated into later issues owing to their acceptance in commerce.
With unusually good detail, clean fields, as well as a fine crispness of strike, this above average example further benefits from a pleasing peripheral patina which served to highlight certain devices. All in all, a choice example of a charming type.
