Byzantine Empire - Follis of Romanos III, 1028-34AD

$95.00

Offered is a scarce and pleasing 25mm class-B Follis, issued anonymously under Emperor Romanos III at Constantinople in 1028-34AD (some speculation that this issue ranges from 1030-40), DOC3/B, Sear#1823, MBR40.4, DNB67, RIC#1977. This piece features Christ facing, inscription ‘+ EMMA NOVHA / IC XC’ (God With US) around, as well as a stepped cross flanked by ‘IS XS / BASILE / BASILE’ (Jesus Christ King of Kings).

This example bearing a lovely dark patina, as well as retaining excellent details, including much of the ‘small’ inscriptions (which are generally lost on these pieces). An excellent example of the type.
