Kingdom of Macedonia (Colophon, Thrace) 299-96BC Silver Tetradrachm
Offered is a 26mm, 16.55g silver Tetradrachm, struck at Colophon (Thrace) under Lysimachus I in the name of Alexander ‘The Great’ in 299-96BC. Being of the Heracles / enthroned Zeus type, this piece remains an example of one of the most successful coinages ever struck - on the low end, it is estimated that over 105 million Tetradrachms of this type were struck across a plethora of mints, and for an extensive period. This posthumous issue is of fine style, and retains good detail despite some ‘horn silver’ deposits, which by and large do not affect the devices. A solid example of a highly sought denomination / type.
