Roman Empire - Brass Sestertius of Marcus Aurelius (172AD)
Offered is a substantial, 30mm brass Sestertius issued under the reign of Marcus Aurelius (r. 161-180AD) in 172 AD, Sear#4976, RIC#1033. This example is of the Roma Seated type, and depicts this effigy seated on cuirass, holding globe and sceptre, with shield behind, surrounded by the inscription ‘TR POT XIX COS IIII.’ The obverse depicts Antoninus Pius, surrounded by inscription ‘M ANTONINVS AVG TRPXX VII.’
With pleasing detail and original patina, this chunky ancient would make a good ‘portrait’ coin or addition to a specialised collection alike!
