Roman Empire - Copper AS of Commodus (189AD)
Offered is a fascinating copper As issued under the reign of Commodus (r. 177-192), minted in Rome in 189AD, Sear#5862, RIC#534. This piece depicts Fortuna seated left, holding a horse by its bridle in her right hand, and a cornucopia in her right (a rudder is placed behind her seat), all surrounded by the inscription ‘FORT MANENT P M TR P XIIII COS V P P S C.’ The reverse bears a type N bust of the Emperor, surrounded by the inscription ‘M COMM ANT P FELIX AVG BRITT.’
A scarce and desirable type, this piece, although corroded, retains surprisingly good detail, particularly on the all-important (in this case) reverse. The traces of museum wax on the obverse also speak to a great deal of time out of the ground, potentially lending this piece the potential for a pedigree. In all, a great opportunity to snap up, at reasonable cost, a satisfying example of a type seldom seen offered.
