Britain - 1890 JW Palmer Penny Post Jubilee Medal
Offered is a very scarce 38mm white metal medal commissioned by J. W. Palmer, foreign stamp dealer located at 281 Strand in London, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Penny Postage and the Penny Black.
There were over 70 stamp dealers operating in and around the Strand as late as the 1980s - this number had fallen to 3 by the early 2000s, and had since thinned to 1 (Stanley Gibbons).
Palmer is not a prolific issuer, and is known to have produced only 1 other medal, for the Golden Jubilee, using very similar dies to those employed on this example.
In all, a well-struck piece that will certainly be close to the heart of any dealer, stamp or coin, and a rare piece of philatelic / London exonumia.
