German States - Prussia 1888 A Gold 10 Mark - NGC AU
Offered is an ever-popular 1888 A (Berlin) gold 10 Mark coin from Prussia’s ‘Year of the Three Emperors,’ KM#514. With Kaiser Friedrich III only ruling for 99 days (9 March to 15 June), it is amazing that as many as 876 224 examples were struck of this type, although today attractive examples remain surprisingly tricky as many were used to produce jewelry and other souvenirs of the ‘Drei Achten, drei Kaiser’ (three eights, three Kaisers).
This piece, which is stuck in .900AU, and has an AGW of .1152oz, bears great detail, as well as subtle coppery ‘old gold’ hues. Certified by NGC as AU details (although we would point out that the minor surface abrasions noted by the aforementioned are perfectly normal on lower AU range examples), this fascinating and attractive piece would make an excellent addition to any collection.
