Roman Empire - Brass Sestertius of Hadrian (135AD)
Offered is a large brass Sestertius issued under Hadrian (r.117-138), Rome mint, Sear#3614, RIC#769. The reverse of this piece depicts Pax standing, holding an olive branch and cornucopia, inscription ‘PAX AVG’ surrounding. The obverse of this piece depicts the laureate and draped bust of the Emperor, surrounded by inscription ‘HADRIANVS AVG COS III PP’ (type Cc).
Although the coin does exhibit overall porosity, as well as a soapy patina consistent with river finds, the portrait detail remains strong. Being a very popular depiction of a well-sought Emperor, this would make an excellent addition to a portrait type collection.
