Offered is a sweet 1890s love token, engraved on a Victorian ‘Jubilee’ bust silver Shilling, featuring ‘AULD LANG SYNE.’ The line is the title of a poem of Scottish origin, which was later set to music. The English meaning of the inscription translated literally to ‘old long since,’ or something akin to ‘times gone by.'
Although love tokens on Shillings from this period are readily available, Scottish pieces are scarce, with examples featuring this extremely popular line being very few and far between. A truly charming piece with a great aesthetic, and a must have for the collector of this type of exonumia.
