United Kingdom (Ireland) 1857 1/- English & Irish Magnetic Co Telegraph Proof Block - U/M - MNH

€150.00

Offered is a very unusual block of 4 of the 1857-issued 1/- Telegraph (the lowest of the 5-denomination issue) stamp from the English & Irish Magnetic Company. These were lithographed by Mawdesley & Co of Liverpool, with values inserted by hand within static stones. The stamps saw very little useage though, as the EIM Co merged and changed the same year that these stamps were delivered. Issued stamps with control numbers in black are rare, with numberless singles with small margins being considered remainders. It is generally agreed though (see Hiscock, Lister & Langmead) that multiples (such as this) and numberless examples with large margins are in fact proofs. A lovely block overall, with only some gum crackle of note. It should be noted that multiples of this issue are a very tough ask indeed.
