Southampton - Ca. 1910 Bowling Green House 3d Token
Offered is a very scarce and fascinating brass 3d token issued for use in the International Club (operated by Enrico Operati), dating from around 1910. Bowling Green House was built in the 1840s, and by the first decade of the 20th century, it housed the International Club, a haven for Italian seafarers - probably why it took on the ‘Italian House’ moniker. Interestingly, two Italian seamen who were members of the club were lost onboard the Titanic in 1912. An attractive piece of great local interest, these are rarely seen at market.
