Victoria 1855 Silver Shilling - Unbarred 'A's Variety
Offered is an interesting 1855 sterling silver 1/-, issued under the reign of Queen Victoria, KM#734.1, ESC#1305. Unusually, this example, being of the Davies type 2 obverse, displays unbarred ‘A’s in ‘BRITANNIAR,’ being an early die state in which there remain hints of the bars. This particular flaw appears to have been present on one of the Davis #2 obverse dies, which seems to have been in use from 1855-58, as this is the range in which it has been observed. A fascinating piece for the specialized collector.
