Newcastle (Tyne & Wear) 1920s-30s Howard Stores 6d Token
Offered is an interesting 23mm, CuNi 6d token, issued by Howards in the earlier part of the 20th century. Howards started in the 19th century as a chain of drapery stores, eventually coming to specialize in school outfitting and wares for children. Their first branch was in Newcastle, but they expanded to have 14 locations in Gateshead, North Shields & Blyth. The firm issued tokens in 1d (8 variants), 6d, 1/- & 2/- denominations, with a single later (1950s) 1/- known in Bakelite. The 1d and 1/- tokens appear to be the most common, followed by the 6d and finally the 2/- being much scarcer. This example attractive and problem-free, bearing original surfaces and bold inscriptions.
