Netherlands (Groningen) 1672 Silver 12.5 Stuiver Klippe - NGC-AU55
Offered is a gorgeous 1672 silver 12.5 Stuiber, or 1/4 Thaler klippe, issued by the city of Groningen, and certified by NGC at AU-55, KM#25, Hamlet#168, Delm#738. These coins were struck (conversely to the assumptions of some auctioneers who call them ‘siege pieces’) after the end of the siege of the city by troops from Cologne and Munster under the command of Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Gallen. These would thusly be more appropriately described as commemorative pieces, and are generally (as this example) struck on regular flans, and survive in better grades. Only a small number were produced for city notables and other dignitaries, and are as such very tricky klippes to find today.
This example is indeed very difficult to fault, bearing a delicate of french grey, russet and mauve, which yields to the well-struck devices. Excellent centering and original surfaces round out this choice piece. Only minimal cabinet friction can be said to take away what is a superior example of a desirable type.
