Netherlands (SMN) 1947-57 5 Cent Boordgeld Token

$5.00

Offered is a 5 Cent ‘Boordgeld’ token, issued by the Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland (Netherlands Steamship Corporation) for use on their ships. After the war, the Gulden was not convertible, and it was illegal to remove specie from the country owing to the atrocious economic situation which prevailed in the Netherlands in the early post-war years. This, paired with high demand for the Corporation’s services owing to increased emigration meant that a token system in which currency was exchanged before boarding to use during the voyage was required.

These tokens were struck in 1947-48 and 1957, with this denomination being one of the scarcer, having a total mintage of 170 000 across the three dates. This example most pleasing with some hints of lustre around the devices. An interesting piece with good nautical interest.
